NLN Announces New Scholarship Funded by Health Carousel Foundation

NLN Health Carousel Foundation Scholarship Award Highlights the Importance of Nurse Educators & Internationally Trained Nurses in U.S. Health Care
The National League for Nursing Foundation for Nursing Education and the Health Carousel Foundation are joining forces to overcome the nursing shortage in the United States through an annual scholarship to develop nursing school faculty.

The Health Carousel Foundation Scholarship is an $8,000 award given to one nurse annually pursuing an advanced degree to establish their career as a full-time nurse educator. The recipient must also have received their initial nursing education outside the United States.

This partnership responds to two hot topics in U.S. nursing. First, a shortage of nursing educators contributes to the overall workforce shortage. According to data from a 2022 American Association of Colleges of Nursing survey, there are over 2,100 full-time nursing school faculty vacancies. That report revealed that U.S. nursing schools turned away almost 92,000 qualified applicants, and a leading reason for this was an insufficient number of faculty. Secondly, many organizations, including AACN, recognize the need for higher diversity among faculty.

The Health Carousel Foundation Scholarship addresses both critical issues by increasing the supply of nurse educators and developing instructors with diverse experiences and backgrounds, as the recipient must have received their initial nursing education internationally and will provide the student nurses they train with unique perspectives on patient care owing to their distinct heritage and culture.

"We proudly welcome the Health Carousel Foundation’s support for the NLN Foundation’s mission of providing financial support to deserving students who have demonstrated a deep commitment to pursuing excellence in nursing. They represent the future of nursing education, fulfilling the National League for Nursing’s mission to prepare a culturally sensitive, diverse nursing workforce to deliver outstanding and equitable care to advance the health of the nation and global community,” said NLN Foundation Chair Patrick Robinson, PhD, R.N., ACRN, CNE, ANEF, FAAN, president, Research College of Nursing.

NLN President and CEO Beverly Malone, PhD, R.N., FAAN, said, “The success of frontline nurses is fueled by expanding the ranks of nurse faculty. The National League for Nursing remains dedicated to funding scholarship opportunities for deserving candidates who pursue careers in nursing education and specialized patient care. Thank you for the generosity of the Health Carousel Foundation, which helps make possible the NLN Foundation's scholarship program."

"Health Carousel, since its inception, has supported solutions to the educator shortage and understands that addressing this issue is key to solving nursing workforce shortages and improving patient care overall," stated the Director of Workforce Sustainability and Ethical Recruitment and Executive Director of the Health Carousel Foundation, Andrew Lingo. "We have administered programs that have helped hundreds of internationally trained nurses realize careers as nurse educators in the U.S. and abroad. Many nurses that completed these programs now serve as faculty at the largest and most prestigious nursing schools worldwide. We are proud to carry this tradition forward today with our partnership with the NLN Foundation."
