NLN to Present Inaugural Marilyn H. Oermann Award for Distinguished Research in Nursing Education to Dr. Cynthia Clark

The National League for Nursing proudly announces that nurse educator-scientist Cynthia Clark, PhD, RN, ANEF, FAAN—who has dedicated her formidable scholarship to nurturing civility, kindness, equity, and inclusion in health care, academia, and workplaces worldwide—has been chosen honoree of the first NLN Marilyn H. Oermann Award for Distinguished Research in Nursing Education.
This award will be formally bestowed at the 2023 Nursing Education Research Conference (NERC) in Washington, D.C., where Dr. Clark will present a talk at the closing plenary session on Saturday, April 1. This new League award program was launched under the NLN/Chamberlain University College of Nursing Center for the Advancement of the Science of Nursing Education.
“This inaugural award, made in honor of Dr. Marilyn Oermann, recognizes Dr. Clark’s scholarship that has been based on a sound foundation of evidence and has significantly impacted students, faculty, organizational systems, and the environment. She has served as a leader in the science of nursing education and as a mentor to future generations of nursing scholars,” said NLN Chair Kathleen Poindexter, PhD, RN, CNE, ANEF, interim associate dean of academic affairs at Michigan State University in Lansing.
Congratulating Dr. Clark, NLN President and CEO Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN, said, “Through her impressive body of research in civility and helping to create a kinder, gentler world and workplace, as well as through her influence and impact in the classroom and the clinic, Dr. Clark truly embodies the National League for Nursing core values of caring, integrity, diversity and inclusion, and excellence. We can’t think of a more deserving recipient of the 2023 Marilyn Oermann Research Award.”
Her nominator, Diane Billings, EdD, RN, FAAN, Chancellor’s Professor Emeritus of Nursing at the Indiana University School of Nursing in Indianapolis, lauded Dr. Clark’s “unique research focus” whose outcomes “have empowered students, faculty, practicing nurses, and other healthcare professionals to improve the health of their work and learning environments.”
A professor emeritus at Boise State University, Dr. Clark founded Civility Matters® at the university, an initiative and resource to inspire, lead, and champion communities of civility, inclusion, and belonging with the mission to promote human understanding, dialogue, acceptance, and support throughout society. During a decades-long career in nursing education and clinical practice in suicide prevention and adolescent mental health nursing, she has pioneered research to bring international attention to the uncomfortable issues of bullying and incivility in academia and health care.
Her theory-driven interventions, empirical measurements, theoretical models, and reflective assessments provide reality-tested strategies and best practices to prevent, measure, and address incivility to build healthy, safe, and productive learning and work environments. Her assessments have been translated into 16 languages and adopted by scholars in 32 countries on five continents. In addition, Dr. Clark is a prolific author and the recipient of numerous teaching, service, and research awards. She is a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing and the National League for Nursing Academy of Nursing Education.

Oermann Award for Distinguished Research in Nursing Education,” said Dr. Clark. “My deepest gratitude to the Selection Committee for recognizing my research contributions, a huge thank you to Dr. Billings for supporting and believing in me—and since Dr. Oermann is one of my heroes—receiving this award in her name and on behalf of the National League for Nursing is especially gratifying,”
