NLN Hosts Nursing Education Research Conference 2023 (NERC), March 30-April 1 in Washington, DC

The Nursing Education Research Conference (NERC) returns this spring, after a five-year, pandemic-induced hiatus, under new, exclusive hosting by the National League for Nursing, NLN/Chamberlain University College of Nursing Center for the Advancement of the Science of Nursing Education.
The conference theme, Regenerating Research in Nursing Education: Moving the Science Forward, reflects a focus on the future of research in nursing education. Gaps in knowledge exposed by the pandemic and resulting responses in nursing education and practice created a unique opportunity for nurse educator-scholars to explore a radical transformation in how evidence is generated and utilized in pedagogical practice.
Marilyn Oermann, PhD, RN, ANEF, FAAN, the Thelma M. Ingles Professor of Nursing Education at Duke University School of Nursing, prolific author, and editor-in-chief of Nurse Educator, will present her vision in a keynote address about Building the Science of Nursing Education: What Will It Take? Dozens more leading nurse educators will add their perspectives during the packed three days of plenary sessions, workshops, panels, and lectures.
“NERC 2023 is relaunching on a solid foundation of robust study and commitment to nurturing outstanding nurse scientists who are dedicated to mentoring the next generation of diverse, highly competent practitioners to optimize patient care and global health outcomes,” said NLN Chair Kathleen Poindexter, PhD, RN, CNE, ANEF, interim associate dean of academic affairs at Michigan State University in Lansing.
“As the first national organization to fund nursing education research, the National League for Nursing is the leader in advancing the science of nursing education research. Consistent with our mission, NERC 2023, this year a new League-exclusive professional development event, will continue our tradition of presenting excellence in the science of nursing education,” said NLN President and CEO Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN. A typically biannual gathering, NERC was historically co-sponsored by the NLN and Sigma Theta Tau International; the COVID-19 pandemic forced its cancellation in 2020.
Through four tracks, rooted in current NLN research priorities—build the science of nursing education; build faculty teaching practice; co-create partnerships with stakeholders; and build a diverse nurse faculty workforce—NERC 2023 aims to achieve five distinct outcomes:
• Use robust designs to generate, translate, and disseminate evidence for teaching practice
• Cultivate a cohort of diverse nurse researchers to lead the advancement of the science of nursing education
• Recognize the diverse influences informing the science of nursing education
• Integrate and apply research findings into educational practice and policy
• Establish the connections between the science of nursing education and patient care outcomes
Conference attendees may earn up to 15 contact hours toward CE credit. Four pre-conference workshops are offered beginning at 8:30 am on Thursday morning, March 30, for those who want to enhance their experience and earn additional CE credit hours.
