NLN Announces Public Policy Priorities for 2023-2024
Commitment to Four Key Policy Areas Remains Strong, Covering Education, Workforce, Health Care Access, Diversity & Inclusion

A vocal and visible presence as an advocate for the health and welfare of the nation and global community, the National League for Nursing has published the latest nursing education priorities for action and advocacy during the next two years. In the just-released 2023-24 Public Policy Agenda, the League renews its commitment to four key policy arenas:
- Nursing Education
- Workforce Development
- Equitable Access to Quality Health Care
- Diversity and Inclusion
“To make a difference, it’s important to use the power of your collective voice. The involvement of National League for Nursing members is vital to the League's continued leadership in shaping and influencing policies that affect the standards by which we educate and advance the interests of the nursing workforce. These are essential to ensure the wellbeing of the patients and communities that depend on nurses to deliver culturally sensitive, equitable high-quality care,” said NLN Chair Kathleen Poindexter, PhD, RN, CNE, ANEF, interim associate dean of academic affairs at Michigan State University in Lansing.
“I want to thank the National League for Nursing Board of Governors for approving and supporting this ambitious and strategic new agenda,” said NLN President and CEO Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN. “We are determined to achieve these timely and necessary goals. I encourage all of our members to join us in taking an active role in shaping the policy choices facing the nursing education profession today.”
The agenda highlights urgent policy issues along with appeals for increased public investment in nursing. Among other things, the National League for Nursing calls for increased support for:
- Programming to attract, educate, and retain diverse candidates for nursing faculty and the nursing workforce
- Research to advance the science of nursing education
- Access to technological innovations in nursing education
- Regulatory reform that facilitates the full-scope practice of nurses with advanced credentials and encourages the development of new models of care that meet high quality and safety standards
- Increased and equitable compensation for members of the nursing workforce
- Expanded emergency and disaster preparedness training
- Equitable access to comprehensive health care for individuals, families, communities, and diverse populations
- Public health campaigns, preventative care, promotion of healthy living, and environmental policies and climate change initiatives designed to improve public health
- Strategic, evidence-based approaches to enhance inclusivity and civility in academic and clinical work and practice environments
- Collaboration among national nursing organizations and other essential partners as mutual stakeholders in achieving health equity and tackling challenges to that presented by social determinants of health
